The most expensive mistake in the final drive business is buying the wrong unit. Here's the reliable way to confirm a CAT, Deere, Komatsu, CNH or Volvo final drive — swing gearbox or travel gearbox — fits your machine before you buy.
Most final drives have a stamped or printed OEM part number on the housing. Write it down exactly — one digit off means a different part. Common formats on CAT/Deere look like 099-6551 or a 7-9 digit number.
Once you have the part number, the fastest confirmation is to cross-reference it against your machine's serial number. If you don't have the part off, the machine serial is the fallback way to narrow the correct final drive.
Know which side it came from: a swing gearbox drives the rotating upper structure; a travel gearbox drives the tracks. Getting the type right halves the chance of a mismatch.
